Ooops!

Was Cheri's outburst yesterday a Freudian slip?

Apparently, according to a Reuters journalist while Gordon Brown was in full flow yesterday, saying how much he considered working for Tony Blair an honour, Mrs Blair is reported to have blurted out the words 'thats a lie' - apparently in disgust, as she was leaving the hall.

The story, reported by a Reuters journalist, erupted across all the main media, spurred on by the knowledge that Mrs Blair cannot stand Gordon Brown at the best of times, let alone when he is poised to deny her husband his job.

Editors clearly decided the unwitnessed exchange was genuine, even though it was eventually denied seven hours later by Mrs Blair.

Interestingly what she said was "the story is not true ... and I don't believe it anyway."

Looks to me like a case of 'hell hath no fury' and all that; but it has certainly made a very boring Labour conference come to life..

And Reuters had to admit Mrs B wasn't even in the hall. Froth Marcus and nothing more. I see you are focusing on personalities rather than issues again Marcus !

I note you say nothing about the alleged tax row emerging in your party. Why not tell us your position on this internal spat ?

Lib Dems, in contrast, have a costed progressive tax policy that would :

Lift two million people on low income out of tax
- Cut the basic tax rate by 2p and take 1.3 million people out of the upper tax rate
- Tackle climate change by taxing pollution.

This I should add is without increasing the overall tax take.

What will the Tories offer at their conference ? More generalities I'll wager ! I prefer substance to Tory 'spin'.

Barry, the Lib Dems tax proposals sound great until you do the maths; like so many other Lib Dem proposals they don't add up.

And as for the 'reduction' in income tax you forgot to mention the 4.5% on everyones income tax bill that your LIT adds; meaning marginal tax rates under your proposals would still be higher for average and below average earners than today.

Having said that the move to taxing consumption -especially damaging consumption- rather than earnings is welcome, and makes good economic as well as environmental sense.

My guess is that the Tories might well go some way down this route too. Let's hope Zac Goldsmith is influential. I have a lot of respect for him.

Marcus, the whole Lib Dem tax package is fiscally neutral.

Lastly, you are not defending the Council Tax are you Marcus ?!

Marcus,

Nice try to distort LD tax proposals ! The reality is Conservatives defend a system where Council Tax accounts for 5.1% of the gross income of those in the bottom 20 per cent of incomes, but only 1.7 per cent of the gross income in the top 20 per cent.

Our proposals shift the local tax burden off the backs of those with the lowest incomes and do away with means tested benefits that fail to reach all who are entitled to them.

Two million 'below average' tax payers will be lifted out of income tax altogether and will not have to pay LIT - and they won't any longer have a council tax bill either!

Others will gain from the 2p national cut, but contribute, depending on their local council's budget decisions, between 4 to 4.5p in local income tax. A net income tax increase of 2 to 2.5p offset against what they previously paid in Council Tax.

Oh and I wonder how detailed ANY policy position will be at your Bournemouth Conference next week ?

It'll be all spin and no substance from 'Dave'
